The Council on Foundations is a nonprofit membership organization that
represents the concerns and interests of grantmakers to policy makers,
the media, and the general public. Its members include a wide variety
of foundations and corporate giving programs. The Council promotes responsible
and effective grantmaking, endorses beneficial public policy, facilitates
cooperative grantmaking, and supports organized philanthropy both in the
United States and internationally.

The Foundation Center is an independent nonprofit information clearinghouse
that publishes a wide variety of material on foundations and corporate

GrantSmart is an informational and interactive resource center for and
about the nonprofit community. The Web site posts data (including IRS
Form 990-PF tax returns) about private foundation activities that
may be of interest to grantseekers, philanthropic organizations, and individual
donors. The information has been gathered and compiled to encourage informed
decision-making and diversification in funding.

Philanthropic Research, Inc. (PRI) is a nonprofit organization that,
through its GuideStar Web site, maintains a database of more than 620,000
nonprofits. The Web site information includes current financials as well
as missions, programs, and other pertinent data on thousands of 501(c)(3)
organizations and foundations in the United States. In addition to using
the site as a comprehensive research tool for gathering financial information
on nonprofits, both grantmakers and grantseekers will find current articles
on the state of philanthropy, charitable giving and the sector in general.
Regional Associations
Both formal and informal associations of grantmakers can provide regional
or local support. There are 28 regional
associations of grantmakers (RAGs) across the country. In their city,
state or multistate regions, RAGs help more than 3,400 local grantmakers
practice more effective philanthropy.

The Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers promotes philanthropy
by inspiring and enhancing the leadership and capacity of RAGs and their
members in promoting the public good. At the national level, the Forum
of RAGs helps individual RAG staff, volunteer leaders and member grantmakers
work together across regions more effectively, and to join forces with
national
colleague organizations interested in protecting and advancing the

Affinity Groups
Affinity groups are professionally-staffed organizations or volunteer-managed
groups that provide opportunities for grantmakers with similar funding
interests to come together. Cooperation among these groups allows grantmakers
to discuss grantmaking issues, discover new grant areas, and develop professional
